Journey Toward Wholeness

At the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, our diversity initiative is called A Journey Toward Wholeness. We are engaged in this initiative because our Unitarian Universalist Principles call us to affirm:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of each person;
  • Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.

Yet, oppressive structures in our world often prevent us from living out these Principles.

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) has been dedicated to identifying and addressing the racism, classism, and other biases--either acknowledged or unseen--that hold us back from living our Principles fully and authentically.

Journey Toward Wholeness is the name of the UUA's anti-oppression, anti-racism, multicultural initiative. UUCF formed its own Journey Toward Wholeness Committee in 2007 to identify and address these issues within our own congregation.

Part of this work includes acknowledgement of the following:

  • In our congregations white culture is considered to be the norm and People of Color are expected to assimilate into this white culture.
  • The focus of much of our justice work is on the victims of racism and not the oppressors that benefit from racism.

We need to put greater focus on the power and privilege that white people have in our racist society and work to identify and eliminate oppression as part of our justice work.

UUCF's Journey Toward Wholeness Committee is in the process of setting goals for this initiative, and preparing an action plan to meet those goals.

To walk the path of the Journey Toward Wholeness is to heal the brokenness in our nation, in our faith community, and in our individual hearts. Please join us in this spiritually enriching work!
