The strategic plan guides the board, CT and lay ministers as they develop annual work goals, which are designed to support the strategic goals. It also serves as a lens through which to evaluate existing programs and make necessary adjustments. The plan also enables the Coordinating Team to make decisions about resource allocation and program emphasis and content.
Our strategic plan starts with our mission and vision. Under our policy-based governance model we develop ends statements – long-term and broad statements of what our congregation wishes to become – to help guide us in fulfilling our mission and vision. Our Board of Directors is responsible for developing our ends statements.
The next tier in strategic plan development is envisioning strategic goals. These are developed by congregational leaders through a process facilitated by the Coordinating Team. Once in draft form, the congregation has the opportunity to provide input. This process may occur several times before leaders and the congregation settle on a final draft of the strategic goals.
Usually, it will take more than a year to complete a goal, hence the creation of a strategic plan for 3-5 years. Just as the ends statements must be moving UUCF toward fulfilling its mission and vision, the goals must be moving us toward accomplishing one or more of the ends statements. The final tier is composed of strategies and action plans – the specific and measurable things that will need to happen to achieve the goals. The Coordinating Team drafts these strategies and action plans with assistance from lay leaders and they become part of the final plan that is approved by the board.
