COVID-19 has hit the Beacon House community particularly hard. Incomes were already terribly low, and parents who continued to work could not afford to take time to care for children at home. To cope, Beacon House has provided virtual academic tutoring, performed virtual mental and physical wellness checks, and delivered baskets of food to families in need. Now it is looking ahead to the possibility its kids will go back to school in the fall. DC’s school board is weighing its options. One is that students will return early in August, attending in shifts to allow them to maintain social distance. To prepare for this possibility, Beacon House is beginning its back-to-school drive now and asking supporters to purchase supplies online that will be delivered to Beacon House.
