New Testament scholar John Dominic Crossan once said, “It is impossible to avoid the suspicion that historical Jesus research is a very safe place to do theology and call it history, to do autobiography and call it biography.” So just who was the Jesus of history? Over the past 2,000 years, many have tried to write the history of the carpenter’s son from Nazareth. In this academically based course, participants will attempt to reconstruct the Jesus of history by examining what modern historians have to say about this enigmatic 1st Century Palestinian Jew. Discussion topics will include the sources for the historical Jesus and the critical methods historians use to evaluate these sources. How has human memory affected the stories told about Jesus? What kind of claims did Jesus make about himself? Did he found a new religion? Participants will also discuss what historians have written about the major chapters in the life of Jesus. Ample time available for questions.
