Dear UUCF Community,
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax (UUCF) delegation just returned from the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly where we were truly blessed by the wisdom, passion and joy of our LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) siblings. In fact, we have now elected Sofia Betancourt as the association’s first BIPOC and queer president.
So what happens when the U.S. Supreme Court not only appears to be in dissonance with the values of our faith tradition, but also actively opposes those values as it did in yesterday’s ruling? What does this mean for religious communities built on foundations of love and inclusion when it comes to the embrace of those so often targeted by policies of exclusion and marginalization?
UUCF’s theme for the coming congregational year will be “Beyond Our Walls.” We will share more about this theme at the Sep. 10 Ingathering Service, however, with the Supreme Court decisions of the past week, along with everything else happening in the world, it is clear the pain and uncertainty being felt by our beloveds has certainly intensified. To those at UUCF, the time is now for our UU values to be shared and acted upon in the public square as much, as often and as prominently as possible. Those who are under threat need to know UUCF as a safe and brave space of love, belonging and spiritual sustenance.
To those unfamiliar with Unitarian Universalism or UUCF specifically, we are here in solidarity with you and we offer our love and support in these trying times.
As we head further into summer, even with our light summer congregational schedule, we invite anyone currently associated with UUCF – member, friend or occasional attendee – to reach out and extend a warm invitation to those feeling threatened or negatively impacted by the backlash to years of progress being exhibited by some institutions, both political and cultural.
To those being increasingly targeted or in need, we are here for all. With all of our efforts and human imperfections, we are a religious community with a history of trying to do better as we open our doors, our hearts and our spaces to those who need the connection and love of the beloved community of ALL souls.
You are love, you are loved, we together are love embodied.
