From Szentgerice, Transylvania
Rev. Barni sent photos showing the great progress in renovating the 800-year old Szentgerice Unitarian Church and constructing a memorial garden including a monument honoring Jakab Elek, the most famous Unitarian born in the village of Szentgerice. Elek was a historian, archivist and military commander during the 1848 revolution. He was elected to both the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Romanian Literary and Cultural Society of Transylvania.
The memorial garden and monument will be formally dedicated on Sep. 25, the day before Transylvanian Thanksgiving. Since no one from Fairfax is able to attend, the Partner Church Circle will send a congratulatory message on UUCF’s behalf.
From Puriang, India
Ditol Mylliemngap, headmaster of the Puriang Unitarian School, sent pictures and a video of the Puriang Unitarian Youth Choir rehearsing before the annual youth service held before Anniversary Day (Sep. 18), commemorating the founding of the first Khasi Unitarian church 134 years ago. Rev. Helpme Mohrmen, the circuit-riding professional minister assigned to Puriang preached the sermon. Rev. Helpme visited UUCF in 2009. Anniversary Day is a state holiday for Unitarians. It is a day of re-dedication, reflection and celebration. In the video, you can hear the keyboard and see the ceremonial glass bowl and candle that the UUCF Partner Church Circle has presented as gifts to our Puriang partners over the years.
