“I trust you. Do you trust me?”

Imagine entering a busy outdoor shopping district in one of the major cities of the world. Setting up a sign that says simply, “I trust you. Do you trust me? Hug Me.” Opening up your arms wide and being willing to accept whatever impact that message would have on the crush of passersby.

The “Hug Me” social experiment, shown in this viral YouTube video, places a blindfolded man in a public space inviting hugs from strangers. The experiment aims to foster unity, trust, and human connection. Proving that despite fear or negative perceptions, people are willing to show love and acceptance.

In its own way, UUCF’s Pastoral Care Team is also leading an experiment after services on Sunday mornings. Members of the Pastoral Care Team*, who have been trained in compassionate listening, put on a distinctive scarf and position themselves in different locations around the sanctuary. The team acts as a resource to anyone in the congregation needing sympathetic listening or access to potential resources. Conversations have ranged from personal grief, troubles with neighbors, and family concerns. Conversations are kept discreet and can be elevated to the senior minister, upon request.

Each week the senior minister announces who will be providing the Pastoral Listening presence at the end of service. When the service ends, ask yourself, “Do I have something weighing heavy on my heart?”

If the answer is yes – then come find us. Members of the Pastoral Care Team are available to listen to you and connect to the resources you may need.

Love and care are waiting for you.
