A Letter From the Future to Coming of Age Youth

Dear You,

How are you? How has it been going? It’s been about 10 years. You are an emerging adult now. Maybe you’ve just graduated from college. Maybe you went right to work and maybe you’ve been able to travel places you had only dreamed of as a Coming of Age youth. Whatever you’ve been up to, I hope you’ve had fun, learned and grown into the beliefs you wrote down in 2023.

Do you remember those? You might have written about the importance of love, friends, family, caring for the earth or being your whole, authentic self. You might have written about your beliefs in a god, goddess or uncertainty about a deity. As you grew, did your ideals match reality or exceed expectations? I’m guessing your beliefs changed, at least a little bit. The world is also still evolving and you have probably gone along with some things and fought hard to change others. You would not be wrong in feeling that much of it was challenging, but also brought great joy.

I wish I could tell you that your efforts and energy changed everything and now it’s a perfect utopia of love, forgiveness and equity. While that isn’t exactly the case, there have been some strides made in changing the world for the better. More and more people are turning to love rather than hate. We are learning new ways to treat the earth’s resources with care through sustainability and action. We are still working on giving equal rights and access to all people and those fights have not always been easy or without pain. But we are proving that siding with love and acceptance is always worth the fight.

I hope that as you’ve taken this time to remember your credo beliefs, you also remember a few things your teachers, mentors, family and friends taught you.You are amazing! You always have been, even when it doesn’t feel like it. Your beliefs and actions make a difference. It’s OK to change your mind when new information is presented. The world would not be what it is without you. Your very presence on earth makes it better, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. (And if they do, don’t believe them). There can never be too much love in the world and it should be shared with wild abandon.

That’s it for now. I’m off to eat some mac and cheese, because the need for comfort food is lifelong, vegan or otherwise. Have fun, hang in there and I’ll see you again in 10 years.

Love,
You
