Rev. William “Bill” Sinkford

Sabbatical Minister, October 2026-January 2027

Rev. Dr. William “Bill” Sinkford is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist, and the first African American to serve as President of the Unitarian Universalist Association (2001–2009). He led the UUA’s witness for marriage equality, denominational growth, transformation and the deepening of our faith. In 2010 Bill was called as senior minister of First Unitarian Church of Portland, where he was named minister emeritus in 2022. In 2017 Bill was called back to the UUA as one of three interim co-presidents at a time of denominational crisis. Failing at retirement, transitional ministry at All Souls Unitarian in DC and sabbatical ministries at several congregations have kept him involved in the work of the UU faith. Throughout his decades of ministry, Rev. Sinkford has been a prophetic voice for racial justice, inclusive language, and spiritual renewal. He has guided the UUA and congregations through moments of crisis and transformation, helping nurture a deeper vocabulary of reverence and covenant. He has mentored many UU religious leaders and leadership teams. A gifted pastor, preacher, and institutional leader, he continues to inspire and guide new generations of Unitarian Universalists.
