News from Puriang in Northeast India

Ditol, headmaster of the Puriang Unitarian School, shared a brief video of one of the nightly home services leading up to the September 18 celebration of the founding of the first Unitarian congregation in northeast India in 1887. He also sent photos and videos of this year’s India Independence Day commemoration by students at the Puriang Unitarian School. Check them out here. Ditol is still troubled by loud ringing in his ears. So far, nothing has provided relief.

Szentgerice in the Transylvania region of Romania

Rev. Barni reports that there was a gathering of members of the Szentgerice Unitarian Church in their 60s. “They organized a very nice celebration; it was good to be together.”

Also from Rev. Barni: “Despite the mixed weather, the summer harvest has been successful, and farmers had a good year. The corn is also growing well, and if in August we get 1-2 rains it will also yield a good harvest. They are working hard on the new highway that passes close to Szentgerice. It will change the image of the Nyárád valley, but if it is built, we hope it will help a lot and there will be fewer accidents on the roads. The situation in Ukraine is becoming increasingly worrying, and we fear it could turn into a world war. British officers and soldiers were captured last week on the front leading attack agents. The situation in Romania is also worrying. Corrupt leaders, politicians and parties looking after their own interests, increased taxes, increasing fuel prices, energy prices, etc., make life more difficult. It is slowly not worth doing anything in this country, just sell everything and when on paper you have nothing to ask for and wait for state aid. But life does not stop and we must move forward.

We didn’t plan a big vacation this year, just smaller trips to Romania. But 2 weeks ago, Ilona (Rev. Barni’s wife) collapsed again. The girls are with my mother. They love her very much and are helping and studying well. Ilona is better. She had 4-5 bad days, but she will be in the hospital for another week. Then we’ll see how things go.”
