Nine members of UUCF who have contributed to the Partner Church Scholarship Program and 11 of last year’s 16 scholarship recipients from UUCF’s partner congregation in Szentgerice, Transylvania met via Zoom on November 16. The students thanked the donors profusely and told us that the scholarships and our interest and encouragement made a tremendous difference in their ability to study in high schools and universities in various Romanian and Hungarian cities.
Most told us of their goals. Three are becoming nurses; two are studying accounting and business; one wants to be a kindergarten teacher; and another a psychologist. Outside interests include music, reading, cooking, soccer, and working with children.
When the students had gone, Rev. Barni told us that one boy had lost his parents and is living with a sister; another boy quit the national soccer development program because of discrimination due to his Hungarian heritage; and one girl needed special help to get through nursing courses taught in Romanian.
There is time to contribute to this year’s Scholarship Drive through the UUCF website or by check, with PCC Scholarship in the memo line!
