Solace in the Woods

An update about changes to UUCF’s Memorial Grove

For many members of UUCF, the Memorial Grove is sacred ground. This outdoor space, down a path behind the Sanctuary, is where we honor our loved ones and treasure the legacy they left for all of us. For some, whose loved ones’ ashes are interred here, it is a place to grieve and to relive so many memories. For others, it is a place for meditation and reflection. It is a place to find solace in the woods.

I am always reminded of the legacy given to us by those whose names are on the wall in the back of the Sanctuary. They believed in UUCF and created this wonderful place for all of us to be in a community together. I am proud that my parents were a part of this journey, and now a part of the Memorial Grove. I will remember them for lives well lived.

After much deliberation, the Property Stewardship Committee has decided to make updates to the Memorial Grove. Here are the plans:

  • We have hired a contractor to create a low retaining wall below the flagstone area so that the ground where ashes can be scattered will be level with the flagstone.
  • We will create a new flagstone walkway across the area with steps down to the existing path in the woods.
  • We are also removing some of the bushes that are not doing well and planting others to give the area a greener look.
  • We will be adding benches with backs to lean on, along with a sign to identify the area as the Memorial Grove.
  • In addition, we are hiring a contractor to maintain the bushes on an ongoing basis for the enjoyment of everyone. The initial work should be starting later in April.

I am grateful this community will be honoring our sacred space, and our sacred ancestors, in the Memorial Grove.
