Unitarian Universalists have a legacy of voter engagement on a wide range of social justice issues: from marriage equality, women’s suffrage and the abolition of slavery to civil and voting rights, advocating for a path to citizenship for immigrants and taking on “The New Jim Crow” and white supremacy. In recent years, the UUCF community has done this through the Unitarian Universalist Association’s UU the VOTE program.
In 2020, UUCF volunteers formed an organizing team to lead UUCF in its efforts to get out the vote for the November 2020 elections. This efforts extended to the 2022 elections as well and will continue through coming elections. The organizing effort led to scores of congregants writing thousands of get-out-the-vote postcards to voters in jurisdictions where voting rights were being actively curtailed – especially in districts where the majority of voters were Black, Indigenous and People of Color.
